Zimmerman Gets Filthy

May 30, 2013

MASSAPEQUA–The Dirty Dogs traded speedster Brett Gardner to the Craydawgs yesterday for 3B Ryan Zimmerman… just in time for Zimmerman to blast three homers for his new team. The Dogs did throw the Dawgs a bone, sending their May $5 move to the Dawgs as consolation for the damage done.

The Barracudas have lost 40/40 threat Matt Kemp to the DL, a devastating loss for the Fish (50.5 points) as they are on the cusp of the league lead behind the Dawgs (55.5) and Villagers (54.0).

Encarnacion’s Salami Gets The Fish In The Hunt

May 24, 2013

FARMINGDALE–Slugger Edwin Encarnacion launched a grand slam yesterday to help the Barracudas get into the mix for first place. Encarnacion is now hitting .250/13/38/2 and proving that his 2012 season was no fluke. The Fish are now just 5.5 points behind the Villagers. The Fish might be in better shape once Ian Kinsler returns from injury as fill-in Jurickson Profar represents a big step down.

Edwin-Encarnacion-having-dinner-560x560 In the Barracudas tradition, Encarnacion’s grand slam entitled him to a seat that night in the owner’s box at the Fish Tank; an honor and a night he will not soon forget.

The Dirty Dogs have lost starter Jaime Garcia for the season. The Filthy Ones had only just acquired Garcia from Arsenal. This is shades of 2010, when the Filth traded ace Jon Lester to the Craydawgs for Kendry Morales, who within a week was lost for the season to injury. When will the Dirty Dogs have their day?

Craydawgs Lose Price, Ogando to Injury

May 18, 2013

HIGHLAND PARK–The front-running Craydawgs took a hit this week in losing one third of their starting rotation to injury. Reigning Maddux Award winner David Price and Alexi Ogando have been replaced by Brandon Morrow and Tommy Milone.

In other news, the Dawgs’ Chris Sale ran his scoreless streak to 23 innings last night, striking out 12 for the win. Skinny Dawg now has five wins and 2.53 ERA… The Barracudas‘ Paul Goldschmidt went 4-for-5 and drove in four with two homers. He’s at .338/12/35/4 and is in the early mix for the Bonds MVP Award… the Villagers tweaked their lineup, sending Michael Young (.302/1/10/0) to the bench in favor of Omar Infante and welcoming Coco Crisp back to the fold.

Week 6 Report: Grove St. 4 Life

MANHATTAN–The BEML XXI standings after six weeks:

130513 week 6 standings

After falling behind the Craydawgs in Week 5, the upstart Villagers roared back in Week 6 to take a five point lead. The GSV led the league in Week 6 in HR (15), R (51), RBI (47) and ERA (1.65). Alex Gordon (.393/3/8 in Week 6) lifted the Villagers and the staff racked up seven quality starts. Unfortunately, the GSV lost the emergent Austin Jackson (.272/2/11/5) to a hammy injury.

The Dirty Dogs picked up four points as Matt Harvey dominated (16 IP, 16 Ks, 8 H+BB) and led the DDs to a league-leading WHIP in Week 6 (0.84). In a bid to shake things up, the DDs also worked an eight-player swap with Arsenal and sent closer Bobby Parnell, Curtis Granderson, Jeremy Hellickson and A-Rod to Big Poppa in return for Jaime Garcia, Tommy Hanson, Starling Marte and Phil Coke. BEMLBlog is not convinced this does much for either side, though Arsenal gains a closer in Parnell and the DDs likely pick up some speed with Marte.

The Craydawgs lost a step in Week 6, dropping 2.5 points, though Evan Longoria is heating up (.464/3/11 this week) and the Dawgs got two one-hitters out of Shelby Miller and Chris Sale. The struggles of Josh Willingham (.136), Alcides Escobar (.103) and Billy Butler (.107) held the squad back.

The Barracudas cannot catch a break in the closer game. Recent acquisition Andrew Bailey hit the DL, followed by J.J. Putz and news that Jason Motte is likely done for the year. The play of Paul Goldschmidt eased the pain somewhat (.348/4/9 in Week 6).

Around the rest of the league… the George Kents struggled, losing 6.5 points this past week as Tim Hudson and Mat Latos were hit hard… Cause Mickey Loves Ya picked up two points and is within striking distance of third place; CMLY picked up Jeremy Guthrie off the wire and were rewarded with a win, while Jon Lester hurled a one-hitter… Snowmen picked up Derek Holland for a win off the waiver wire; they should get Zack Greinke back shortly… Arsenal drafted a couple of gems after everyone else drafted their teams: Jean Segura (who is on the market to the highest bidder) is hitting .359/6/15/10 and Hisashi Iwakuma has four wins with 51 strikeouts in 52 innings and a 1.74 ERA/0.74 WHIP….
